As the long winter comes to an end with the sunrise at the South Pole, the winterovers embark on spring cleaning around the station. Although not much snow falls at the Pole, it does blow in from other parts and accumulate—so snow removal is one of the chores. In the photo below, you can see that the pole marker at the ceremonial South Pole, with the mirrored sphere on top, doesn’t look as much like a “pole” with all the extra snow around its base. The flags around the ceremonial Pole also need to be occasionally rejuvenated since the winds can really batter them over time. Out on the ice, a snowcat was remaking the skiway that normally operates throughout the summer. At the end of the week, they held their traditional sunrise dinner, where this season’s group photo was revealed.
