Week 21 at the Pole

A bright swath of auroras extending low across the sky with a clear view of the Milky Way above—what more could one want (except perhaps to see it in person)? Well, those who winterover at the South Pole station count themselves among the lucky ones. Besides observing auroras in full swing, last week they were celebrating Memorial Day; participating in more fire training, including playing kickball in full fire gear (image below shows team member outdoors dragging refilled bottles after training); watching the Eurovision final in the gym; and finishing up pole marker designs, which remain under wraps until the new pole marker is unveiled on New Year’s Day. Last but not least, they enjoyed the sounds of a dulcimer, penguin-inspired, that was built at the South Pole.
