Last week was fairly quiet as far as the IceCube detector went—no major happenings there. But the sky, on the other hand, what a scene! The auroras (australis, that is) were particularly brilliant and striking. The fisheye lens perhaps adds to the dramatic effect, but some of these auroras were bright enough to illuminate the snow on the ground. The week’s photos captured not only auroras but also plenty of stars and little glimpses of the Milky Way. The bottom image has all of that plus a bright moon as backdrop to the geographic pole marker.
